Self Care in Times of Stress

Engaging in self-care can be a difficult task under normal circumstances. Engaging in effective self-care when quarantined at home - especially if you have children - is an even more challenging task!

It is important to take care of ourselves first, so we can be available to take care of others. Think about being on an airplane: the flight attendants instruct us to put on our own oxygen mask before helping others.

If you find yourself overwhelmed, please don't hesitate to ask for help.

Here are some quick and easy self-care strategies to try alone or with your family:

  • Soak in the sunshine! Get outside for a quick walk or just stand on the porch.
  • Take a break. Even if your child won't nap, having daily quiet time to take a break and focus on yourself can be helpful.
  • Stick to a schedule. Children (and adults too!) often thrive on consistency and predictability. Try to do the same activities around the same time each day (waking up, meal times, play time, time for learning, bedtime). That helps everyone know what to expect and can make your job easier.
  • Be social while socially distancing. Schedule time with your friends and family members to share a virtual coffee or video-chat a meal together.
  • Give yourself some grace! This is a stressful time for everyone, and it's okay to have hard days. We are all figuring this out together. Reach out to friends, family, or trusted professionals if you need help.

Showing Teacher Appreciation at a Distance

To all our educators, staff, and administrators: this is probably one of the hardest moments in your professional lives. We can't make this virus go away, but we hope you feel supported and appreciated as the dedicated and necessary members of our society that you are. Our children, and our future, would not be the same without you.

Parents, working with the other families in your child's class to show teachers some appreciation is a great way to stay connected. How can you show gratitude at a distance, though?

What about:

  • A collage
  • Videos from classmates
  • Classroom supply assistance
