How Does Your Garden Grow?

For the home - content provided by our partner:

Time to Start Our Gardens!

Spring is here, and it is time to start our gardens! Start a garden indoors as it is easy to care for and can be transferred to pots later!

What you will need:

Steps for starting your seeds:

  1. First, fill your containers with the soil. You can count how many scoops it takes to fill the container!
  2. Next, look at the seeds. Talk about the size and shape of different seeds!
  3. Label the pot with the name of the flower or type of seed if you are planting a variety.
  4. Plant a few seeds in each container. Place seeds in your child's hand, and they can put them into the container, pushing into the soil.
  5. Let your child help water them with the spray bottle. Find a sunny windowsill to put the pots in, talking about how the seeds need sunshine and water to grow.

What is my child learning from gardening?

  • They develop patience as they wait for their seeds to grow.
  • They learn about the growth process.
  • They develop a sense of responsibility as they take care of the plants.
  • There are many opportunities to count, talk, use their fingers, and use print!

Featured Book: If You Plant a Seed

Written & Illustrated by: Kadir Nelson

Highlights: While planting seeds in their garden, two animals learn the value of kindness.

Best for: Pre-K, ages 3-5

Wake County Public Library Programming: Spring into Kindergarten readiness with ABC Craft & Learn, a program offered multiple times a week for preschool-aged children in Wake County! The program simulates a Pre-K classroom and provides children the opportunity to learn those important social, developmental, and pre-literacy skills that are necessary for a successful launch to Kindergarten! Children listen to a story, do an alphabet-themed craft to help develop their letter awareness and fine motor skills (coloring, cutting), and practice classroom skills. Find more information online.

Literacy Tip: Gardening allows the opportunity to talk to your child about the way things grow. Ask your child questions throughout the entire process from purchase to planting, picking, and partaking.

May's book selected by the Preschool Librarians of Wake County Public Libraries.

We love our teachers and teacher assistants! This Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6 - 10), we hope you're getting all the love and thanks you deserve.
