While our community continues to fight COVID-19, confront racism, and plan for an uncertain future, there is a tug at our hand. Children pull us into the future with their driving appetite for life and learning. July 1st marks the beginning of a new fiscal year and a new three-year funding cycle, dedicated to providing children with the early childhood experiences they need and the future they deserve.

Each year, with the support of community workgroups, WCSS’s Program Planning Committee studies Wake County’s needs and assesses the gaps in services for children birth to 5. WCSS then calls for proposals from local organizations to address the need, and through a similar process of community expert engagement, recommendations are made to the WCSS Board of Directors for funding approval. You can learn more about the process here.

We are excited to announce the allocation of $12,032,055 in grants to 11 partner agencies, funding 21 programs that support young children for the 2020-21 Fiscal Year. Below is a complete list of the funding awards organized by the goal area they support.

July 2nd marked the first-ever Wake Pre-K Curbside Application Drop Off event! We continue to find new ways to connect with families and ensure they have access to great programs like NC Pre-Kindergarten. Staff assisted with applications, made copies of documents, and booked follow up appointments with families where needed. Special thanks to Kaplan Early Learning for providing bags for this event and our supply distribution for child care.

NEXT CURBSIDE EVENT: AUGUST 6th, 9AM - 1PM!

It is a gift to be pulled to smell a flower, to have a tiny hand point to a discovery with glee, or to watch a child's chin get covered in peach juices as they savor summer's sweet bounty. The heavy burdens of these times can limit the energy and opportunities for these precious moments that will not wait for later. We are intent, along with our network of partners, to ensure young children have a childhood rich in learning experiences - even in COVID times.
