Women in Early Childhood

It's clear from looking around at classrooms and centers that early childhood is a field of mostly women. Did you know that more than 98% of Pre-K teachers are women? With all this power to shape our children's future, it's no wonder Beyonce sings about girls running the world!

This past month, the culmination of many early childhood teachers' hard work has been seen in all the Pre-K graduations taking place across Wake County! Did you participate in any of them? Here's an album of just a few of the celebrations at area schools this spring.

WCSS supports finding ways to improve policies that increase wages in Pre-K and child care, some of the lowest in the country. For the earliest childhood years, teachers who work with infants and toddlers are eligible to sign up for the AWARD$ program through the CCSA. This program recognizes your hard work and tender care for our youngest children with a salary supplement for those who qualify.

THANK YOU to all of our women in early childhood! You truly make a difference in the lives of the children you work with. We're honored each day to support your impact here in Wake.

We are in the final week of the 2019 Women's World Cup, the international championships of women's soccer! The best female soccer players have gathered in France to determine which team wins it all.

The USA women are the dominant team, and they are the favorites to win the World Cup. Even closer to home, we have the luck to host the NC Courage, one of the top teams in the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League). Four of the Courage players were selected to represent the USA in the World Cup. These women are great role models for our future superstars here in Wake County!

The USA plays in the semi-final game today at 3pm. If they lose, they play on Saturday, July 6, at 11am. If they win, they will play for the World Cup on Sunday, July 7, at 11am. Check your local TV listings or stream online to watch the games.

Wake County Public Library Programming: Find some books that are fun to sing! Check out this link for ideas.

Literacy Tip: Many children's books are fun to sing and are based on classic children's songs. Singing slows down language and allows children to build vocabulary. Enjoy singing stories with your children!
