How Do You Play with a Baby?

Interaction and play is so important for a baby's development. But, they aren't talking, walking, or even crawling yet. So, how do you play with a baby?

Reassure parents or caregivers that THEY are their child's favorite playmate! Just interacting with a child, no matter the age, will be exciting for the baby and encourage learning.

Zero to Three is a great online resource for ideas. Their "Year of Play" article has different themes for each month to spark creativity. Some examples include playing with "rain" in the bathtub or blowing bubbles.

Babies and young children are hungry to learn. They need lots of clear, open space to move and explore. Children learn by doing and by playing. They learn through using their senses and their muscles.

You can encourage play and learning with your baby by:

  • Providing repetition by doing the same things over and over
  • Offering household objects, gadgets, and toys that are durable and safe to feel, taste, touch, throw, and bang
  • Playing baby games, such as peek-a-boo or partially hiding a favorite toy for them to find
  • Supplying toys and objects that have interesting textures and shapes
  • Showing babies books with faces and photos of close family members
  • Giving babies floor time to be on their tummy to build muscle strength
  • Read and/or sing rhymes and songs often to your baby, helping your baby with language and development

Most importantly, babies learn best when you are their partner in play!
