For the classroom:

Tips for Teachers!

We often focus on the experience of the child as they begin Pre-K or a new child care center. What about our teachers, teacher assistants, aides, and other staff? How can you prepare for success when starting a new school year or job?

5 Tips for Starting Off Strong:

  1. Take time to get to know your colleagues and understand the social culture of your new workplace.
  2. Be willing to try new things and ask for feedback.
  3. Love every child in your class and make sure they know it!
  4. Always have a backup plan/extra materials/bonus ideas and games.
  5. Be aware of your energy and take care of yourself.

Tips for Families!

Most parents want their children to succeed and have a smooth transition into a new child care, Pre-K, or Kindergarten. Parents can utilize daily experiences that develop their children's academic, social, independence, and communication skills needed for school.

10 Tips for Starting Off Strong:

  1. Read to your child daily and discuss the stories
  2. Attend storytimes at the library with other children
  3. Sing rhyming songs to explore language skills including finger plays
  4. Give your child games and puzzles that allow independent play and promote counting and problem solving
  5. Let your child draw, write their name, color, scribble, and cut and paste things
  6. Help your child learn basic colors, shapes, and names of objects
  7. Make rules and provide consequences
  8. Encourage your child to play, take turns, and share with other children
  9. Have regular mealtime and bedtime routines to help your child follow directions
  10. Let your child dress themselves, put their shoes on, and be independent to use the toilet and wash their own hands

Literacy Tip: Back to school season is a great time to sing the classic song "Wheels on the Bus." Did you know that you can substitute different modes of transportation too? Next time, try using the "engine in the car" or the "whistle on the train." Create ideas together and you can enjoy this song "all through the town!"

August's book selected by the Preschool Librarians of Wake County Public Libraries.
