For the classroom:

Play & Learn Outside!

During these times of isolation and stay-at-home orders, your classroom may still be at your center, or it may be at your home. You may be a traditional teacher or a newly-baptized homeschooler. Either way, now is a good opportunity to let the outdoors be your classroom! Whatever can be learned inside can be learned on a grander scale through nature play.

What can you learn in an outdoor classroom?

  • LITERACY: Check out these 10 ideas for combining outdoor activity with books and words!
  • SCIENCE: Gardening is great for exploring biology, agriculture, botany, and more! Plus, many children enjoy getting their hands dirty and seeing the growing cycle.
  • MATH: "Inside tools" can be used outside, too. Bring a ruler outside while you plant seeds and see what you can measure!
  • ACTIVE PLAY: A classic! Be Active Kids has TONS of handouts using different locations, themes, and materials for play.
  • Visit the WCSS Pinterest page for even more activities, recipes, and ideas!

Using Nature for Art

We spent months indoors during the winter, but now nicer weather is here. Sunshine calls for spending more time outdoors with your toddler!

Research shows that outdoor play fosters children's intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development. Being outside stimulates all the senses. Not only is it healthy, it teaches children at a young age to care for and appreciate nature.

[Need ideas for where to get outside? Wake County's trails and greenways are still open! Just remember social distancing with others.]

Recommendations for sensory outdoor activities:

  • Create a list of things to be found in nature and go on a scavenger walk with your toddler to look for them (ex: a pink flower, a bird singing, a crunchy leaf)
  • Use construction paper to create paper crowns, gluing pieces of flowers and plants on them as decoration
  • Use materials from nature to create a collage using paper and glue or just the sidewalk
  • Allow preschoolers to explore the seeds from the foods we eat hands-on and learn about how our food grows
  • Bonus: 10 more nature activities you can do as a family!
